@bsky.art: A Brief Look at its Evolution

Alongside this post, I will also be sharing a detailed update on the recent improvements to @bsky.art, including an explanation of the feeds, as well as a look towards future plans.

Before diving into that, I’d like to take a moment to share a brief overview of the account’s journey and the inspiration behind its creation.

When I first joined Bluesky, it was challenging to connect with fellow artists. Back then, features like custom feeds were still just proposals, the platform simply showcased a chronological timeline of posts from accounts users followed. As many art enthusiasts—including myself—began regularly reposting artists which helped to connect the community, it became clear that a dedicated art account would be beneficial. I created @bsky.art as a central space for artists and enthusiast in the community to find each other.

Shortly after, with the introduction of custom feeds, the opportunity to enhance the experience showed. I was fortunate to connect with @redsolver.dev (creator of @skyfeed.app) who helped build the initial Art Feed—a simple timeline showcasing image posts from artists followed by the account. I also began experimenting with dedicated accounts for specific communities like photography, but these were ultimately paused to focus on the main account.

As Bluesky’s user base grew, it became clear that the original feed needed an upgrade. While a predetermined list kept the content safe-for-work and allowed users to add artwork to the feed without additional steps, a more inclusive and dynamic approach was needed. Today, the feed now combines the curated list with tags and third-party moderation tools, allowing anyone to share their work. Tags are still a fairly rudimentary method in my opinion, I think we can find more dynamic options down the road, but this is a notable change to the account as it’s much more accessible.

I’m excited about the continued evolution of custom feeds. It’s a dynamic interplay between Bluesky’s growing community and the innovative tools being developed both by the Bluesky team and passionate community members. This week, I’m happy to announce that the @bsky.art feeds have migrated to @graze.social—a team that I believe is equipped to tackle challenges larger feeds may face as this more users join, particularly scaling and moderation.
